Farm Girl is forever wishing for winter weather. There is never enough snow or cold for her taste. Our southern geography often limits her dreams of a winter wonderland. We have recently found that she has parameters and would prefer nice fluffy white stuff to ice.
Weatherman had been hyping up a recent storm as a possible ice storm, so we took them seriously….we still have memories of a week without power in the Midwest after an nasty ice storm 20+ years ago. We did lots of prep so that animals would have what they need and we would too. The freezing rain missed us (hurray!) but we ended up with 5 inches of snow covered in several inches of sleet. This quickly turned our snow into a five inch block of ice or “snowcrete” as everyone began to call it. It was no joke. Plowing and shoveling it was almost impossible. We had a week of no school and staying at home. Walking out to feed the animals was taking your life in your hands and we dubbed the farm the Grawly Bear Ice Rink. We did find the ice rinks made for really good, fast sledding! With lots of chilly temps, the icy stuff has stuck around for 2 1/2 weeks. Even Farm Girl is ready for some patches of grass!
